PTE Question Practice - Writing Section

Summary

The Writing Section constitutes one of the four principal scores for communicative abilities assessed in your PTE exam. Its sub-types, scoring criteria and tips will be described in the article below.

Types of Questions

The Writing section consists of just 2 question subtypes.
They include;
  1.  Summarize Written Text
  2.  Essay Writing  
More details on each subtype will be given below. 

Summarise Written Text 

In this section, the student is presented with a paragraph based on a certain topic, they are required to summarise said paragraph within 10 minutes.  The word count for this section is between 5 and 75. Looking to master this question type? Practice on PTE Labs now!

Essay

This section will test the student's Grammar, Spelling, Vocabulary and Written Discourse Skills. The student will be given a topic and will be required to write an essay with a word count of 200 to 300 words within 20 minutes.  Looking to master this question type? Practice on PTE Labs now!

Scoring Criteria

The responses for the Writing Modules may have the following grading criteria applied to them. 
  1. Content: This is based on how appropriate the test taker's response is in relation to what was asked and if all important key points have been included.  Example: A response written on a topic that is different from what was asked, A response that requires certain keywords that should have been memorised.
  1. Form: These credits will be based on more formal traits in your response. Example: the number of words.
  1. Grammar: Based on how well you have structured your sentences and if they consist of any grammatical errors.
  1. Vocabulary: Evaluates if your response consists of words that are congruent with the subject matter, including correct usage of those words. 
  1. Development, Structure and Coherence: This is scored according to how well your sentences are structured.
  1. General Linguistic Range: Evaluates if the language in your response conveys your ideas correctly.

Tips

  1. For Summarise Written Text, it is important that the user sticks to the maximum word count of 75, not adhering to this rule, results in 0 points for Form. Additionally, only one full stop can be used. 
  2. For Essays, kindly make sure that the word count is within the range specified for maximum marks.
